The Rega Mercury pre-amplifier sets out to deliver pure, uncompromised audio performance. Hand-built in England, it leverages almost forty years of Rega engineering to reveal the full potential of your system. Thanks to its ultra-low noise floor, the Mercury uncovers delicate detail, wide dynamics, and the natural flow of real music.
The art of silence
Quiet passages often carry the emotional core of a performance. The Mercury preserves these subtle moments by keeping the signal path as clean as possible. Its discrete analogue stage, high-performance DAC, dedicated headphone amplifier, and vivid IPS display come together to create a flexible, reference-level pre-amplifier that remains simple to use every day.

Amplifier circuit
Inside the Mercury, Rega uses a discrete, differentially driven, fully symmetrical common-base amplifier architecture. This high-linearity, wide-bandwidth design delivers strong voltage and current drive with extremely low distortion. Critical stages use Linear Systems ultra-low-noise FETs, similar to those found in Rega’s Aura MC phonostage.
The Alps Blue Velvet RK27 volume control—paired with symmetrical driver stages, offers smooth operation and precise channel tracking. Rega also removes output coupling capacitors by using DC-coupled main outputs, kept safe by active protection circuitry. From DAC output to pre-amp output, the entire analogue signal path remains symmetrical for optimal musical integrity.
Power supply
A custom toroidal transformer and linear power supply form the foundation of the Mercury’s performance. Rega uses a discrete, symmetrical tracking supply with fast diodes, low-noise voltage references, and localised capacitance for each circuit stage. The unusually high supply voltage increases headroom and keeps the signal clear even during demanding musical peaks.
Signal path
Every part of the Mercury’s audio path receives careful attention. Rega uses high-quality relays, polypropylene capacitors, and the same Alps RK27 volume control found in the flagship Osiris. The headphone amplifier mirrors the Mercury’s main amplifier topology, giving it strong voltage and current drive to power both low- and high-impedance headphones with authority.
Digital input circuitry
The asynchronous USB input is galvanically isolated and uses dedicated power regulation. Rega re-clocks both PCM and DSD data internally and employs two low-jitter oscillators to cover both professional and domestic sample rates. The S/PDIF input uses a Wolfson digital receiver with a precision PLL to recover clean data and timing information.
Two parallel Wolfson DACs convert PCM and DSD signals, feeding a symmetrical analogue filter and amplifier stage built with ultra-low-noise FETs. Rega chose Wolfson converters for their strong engineering and natural sonic character, resulting in a smooth, coherent digital playback experience.
Protection
The Mercury constantly monitors DC levels and thermal conditions on both the main and headphone outputs. A microcontroller manages soft-start, standby, and power-supply supervision to protect the transformer and keep in-rush current low. It also controls the automatic standby function, allowing the Mercury to meet modern eco standards without compromising sound quality.
To maintain purity, the protection, supervision, and display systems all run from their own isolated power supply.
Volume control
The Mercury uses the same Alps Blue Velvet RK27 volume control found in the Osiris, supported by symmetrical common-base driver stages for exceptional precision and smooth sonic behaviour.
Balanced / unbalanced
Rega designs the Mercury and Solis as unbalanced circuits for the best possible sound quality. While the Mercury includes balanced XLR inputs and outputs, these require additional conversion stages, which can introduce a small amount of noise or distortion. In most home systems, unbalanced connections offer the cleanest performance.
Balanced systems shine in studios and PA setups where long cable runs need extra noise rejection. They use larger XLR connectors that often feel more substantial, though they do not inherently improve sound quality in a domestic system. Because some Rega components find their way into studio environments, the Mercury provides balanced options for those who need them.
History and innovation
Despite its name, the Mercury is the most complex electronic product Rega has built. Its lineage reaches back to the original Rega Elicit amplifier of the early 1990s and incorporates decades of refinement. Housed in a custom CNC-machined aluminium chassis, the Mercury represents Rega’s highest expression of pre-amplifier design and engineering expertise.
