Wattson Audio Madison Phono
The Wattson Audio Madison Phono brings Swiss precision engineering and advanced digital signal processing to high-end phono playback. Developed in close collaboration with Wattson Audio’s sister company, CH Precision, it takes a fresh approach to phono preamplification.
Instead of relying entirely on traditional analogue RIAA networks, the Madison Phono performs equalisation and cartridge loading in the digital domain. This allows the unit to apply highly precise processing while avoiding phase deviations caused by component tolerances and ageing.
Swiss Precision Meets DSP
The Madison Phono combines sophisticated DSP technology with carefully engineered analogue circuitry. As a result, it can handle cartridge loading, gain and EQ with exceptional precision.
Moreover, its digital architecture allows the phono stage to support multiple EQ curves. This makes the Madison Phono suitable for both modern records and historic vinyl pressings that use different equalisation standards.
Flexible Cartridge Support
The Madison Phono provides three independent input architectures. It supports traditional Moving Coil cartridges as well as DS Audio optical cartridges.
For MC cartridges, users can adjust the load impedance and gain through the network control interface. Optical cartridge users can also connect directly to the dedicated optical architecture.
Precision EQ in the Digital Domain
The Madison Phono goes beyond the standard RIAA curve. Its DSP platform can accommodate multiple historical EQ standards, including Columbia and Decca.
Therefore, listeners can select the appropriate EQ curve for their records without changing hardware. The settings can also be changed during playback through the control interface.
Analogue and Digital Outputs
The Madison Phono offers both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analogue outputs. This makes it easy to integrate into a traditional analogue system.
It also provides a digital output for direct connection to a Madison Streamer or a high-end DAC. This gives users the flexibility to choose where digital conversion and further signal processing take place.
Network Control
The Madison Phono features an Ethernet RJ45 connection for network setup and control. Once connected to your local network, the unit can be configured from a phone, tablet or computer.
The Wattson Music App can automatically discover the Madison Phono on the network. From there, users can access the web-based control interface and adjust cartridge settings, gain and EQ curves.
Firmware updates can also be installed over the network. This keeps the DSP algorithms and system software up to date.
Designed for Optical Cartridges
For owners of DS Audio optical cartridges, the Madison Phono offers an integrated alternative to a separate decoder box. The unit combines the required optical cartridge power supply with signal processing in one chassis.
This creates a cleaner and more streamlined installation. It also allows optical cartridge users to take advantage of the Madison Phono’s advanced DSP platform.
Precision Swiss Construction
The Madison Phono reflects the engineering standards of its Swiss development. Its chassis uses CNC-machined aerospace-grade aluminium, milled from a solid block.
This rigid construction helps control vibration and provides effective electromagnetic shielding. In addition, the mechanical design supports the low-noise environment required by the sensitive phono signal.
Wattson and CH Precision Heritage
The Madison Phono was developed with deep collaboration between Wattson Audio and CH Precision. This partnership brings advanced Swiss engineering and high-precision DSP expertise to the phono stage.
When used with a Madison Streamer or DAC, Power S external power supply, and Madison Amplifier, the Madison Phono can form the heart of a complete high-end digital and analogue system.
